Jack & Jill

Jack & Jill

The famous motif of a little boy and girl going up a hill to draw water from a well but falling over on the way back down has been a firm favourite in the nursery rhymes tradition for centuries. There are wonderful theories about the possible secret meanings behind the names but for our purposes, we are taking them at face value. There are a couple of other verses whereby Jill is reprimanded for supposedly “causing Jack's disaster” but I have chosen to leave them out. Gesturing walking up a hill is something children usually find quite comical.
