Rock-a-Bye Baby

Undoubtedly the most famous English lullaby. The lilting melody mirrors the swaying treetops. There are many ideas about the origin of these, admittedly rather strange lyrics. One is that the Mayflower colonisers observed the indigenous people of America hanging the pappooses, which they carried their babies in, to tree branches while they worked.
